Development Engineer - Embedded Systems
The Role
DCS are looking to recruit an engineer to work alongside our existing technical team.
DCS are primarily a software company, however we are involved in all aspects of software, hardware and embedded systems design and development. We specialise in advanced real-time software algorithms for vehicle detection and classification. Our software typically operates on electronic equipment installed at roadside locations. We develop exclusively under Linux and our systems operate under embedded Linux on a range of different hardware platforms including x86 and ARM. As a small company we will expect you to undertake a wide range of tasks - everything from wielding a soldering iron to putting together presentations to prospective purchasers or specifiers. Some occasional travel within the UK will be necessary, and there may be the opportunity for overseas travel. This role offers an unrivalled opportunity to be involved with all aspects of a high technology engineering business.
This position is available immediately. The job would be based in the New Forest area of the UK, working with and reporting to one of our senior Systems Engineers. Salary and benefits are negotiable for the right candidate.
The Person
Academic Skills
The ideal candidate will have a good technical background in hardware and software either by virtue of training or experience, and will preferably be educated to graduate level. We will consider any appropriate technical degree discipline.
Personal Skills
- Organised and methodical approach to work and problem solving.
- Must be practical and able to apply themselves to a wide range of tasks.
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.
- Appreciation of commercial aspects of a business.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Must hold a full, valid UK driving licence.
Technical Skills
Essential Skills
- Good Unix/Linux skills (including configuration, operation and programming).
- Good C programming skills.
- Embedded systems development (including emulation and debugging).
- Electronic systems design.
- Data communications (RS232, RS485) and protocols.
- Prototype construction.
Desirable Skills
- PCB design/CAD layout.
- Communications – SPI, I2C, TCP/IP, Ethernet, USB.
- Appreciation of mechanical design and assembly.
- FPGA/ASIC design and implementation.
- Linux device drivers, kernel building, GNU toolset.
- Assembly language programming.
